Who needs a UK ETA?

Citizens of 91+ countries need a UK ETA to visit England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Of these, 56 also need ETIAS for Schengen travel.

British citizens and Irish citizens do NOT need a UK ETA. The +ETIAS badge means the country also needs ETIAS for Schengen Area travel.

How to Apply (Step by Step)

The UK ETA can ONLY be applied for via the official mobile app. There is no website. Your phone needs NFC to scan your passport chip.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

The app-only process catches many people off guard. Here are the most frequent issues applicants encounter and exactly how to resolve them.

NFC scanning fails

Hold your phone flat against the BACK cover of your passport. Try removing your phone case.

Photo rejected

Use a plain white or light background. Remove glasses. Ensure good lighting.

Wrong passport used (dual citizens)

Apply using the passport you will travel with. If you're a British citizen, you do NOT need an ETA.

App times out

The app has no save-and-return feature. Complete the application in one sitting.

Passport not recognized

Ensure your passport is machine-readable (has the camera icon on the cover). Older passports may not work.

Why Your UK ETA Might Be Denied

The UK ETA has an approximately ~98% approval rate. However, applications can be denied for the following reasons:

Criminal convictions or pending criminal proceedings
Immigration violations or previous visa overstays
Security or terrorism concerns
Providing false or misleading information
Passport photo not meeting requirements
Technical errors in the application

If denied, you can reapply after correcting errors or apply for a standard UK visa instead.

UK ETA vs ETIAS: Do You Need Both?

Short answer:If you are visiting both the UK and the Schengen Area, yes — you need both. The UK ETA covers England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. ETIAS covers the 30 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital travel permit required for visa-exempt visitors to the United Kingdom. It was introduced in stages from 2025 and became mandatory for all eligible nationals on February 25, 2026. It is not a visa — it is a pre-travel screening similar to the US ESTA or the upcoming EU ETIAS.

How much does the UK ETA cost and how long is it valid?

The UK ETA costs £20 (approximately $25 USD / €23 EUR) and is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries to the UK during that period.

Can I apply for a UK ETA on a computer or only on my phone?

You can ONLY apply via the official UK ETA mobile app (available on iOS and Android). There is no website application option. The app requires NFC to scan your passport chip, so your phone must have NFC capability.

Do EU citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. Since Brexit, EU and EEA citizens are no longer exempt from UK immigration requirements. All EU/EEA nationals (including French, German, Spanish, Italian, etc.) must obtain a UK ETA before travelling to the United Kingdom.

Do I need both a UK ETA and ETIAS?

If you are visiting both the UK and the Schengen Area (most of continental Europe), yes — you need both. They are separate systems run by different authorities. The UK ETA covers England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. ETIAS covers the 30 Schengen countries. Apply for each one separately.

What happens if my UK ETA is denied?

If denied, you will be informed of the reason. Common rejection reasons include criminal history, previous immigration violations, or errors in the application. You can reapply or apply for a standard UK visa instead. A denial does not prevent you from applying for a full visa.

Can I transit through the UK without a UK ETA?

It depends. If you are passing through UK border control (e.g., leaving the airport or connecting between terminals at Heathrow), you need a UK ETA. If you have an airside transit that does not require passing through immigration, you may not need one — but this only applies to certain nationalities and routes. Check GOV.UK for transit rules.
